Windows XP Issues

Hey guys,

We just had an electrical storm come through and after powering the computers back up, we found that one of them was having some issues. It won't connect to our network anymore and it stopped using the default windows xp theme for the start menu and windows.

On the network trouble:
-It has no IP address assigned
-The icon in the system tray shows that it's trying to connect
-ipconfig /release returns IP Address for adapter ... has already been released.
-ipconfig /renew returns The RPC server is unavailable.

My first thought was that some of the files were shredded, but aside from replacing all of them by hand, I'm not quite sure how to approach this problem. Any thoughts on how to fix or further diagnose?

You might want to try doing a system restore first to see if that will fix the issues. If not, you may want to start troubleshooting hardware like the network card, hard drive.

Yeah. Prepping for restore right now.

I was hoping there might be a better option. It's a dual boot system, and my other OS is running internet perfectly, so it's not the hardware. Could you explain what you mean by troubleshooting the hard drive?

Well nix that.

Replaced 2 of the RPC dlls with known working copies and ran registry cleaners. After the 2nd reboot it started working correctly. Not really sure which one did it.

Please add on to post or PM me or something if this helps anybody else with this problem. I'm interested to know which one did it.

<---- EDIT ----->
OK, nix that nix that.

It worked for one boot cycle. The next time it started, it was not working again.

Sorry, I forgot include that the network card is perfectly fine. This is a dual-boot system, and I can use the internet on the other OS.
