hi,

A week ago my computer crashed due to a hardware problem. that was fixed, but ever since then i get a windows update window, which fails to install the updates (ne framework 2.0 and 3.5 updates). this causes some error messages to appear in certain programs (which i suppose use net framework). any idea how to fix this?

this is a copy paste from the failed update window (some words aren't in english):

עדכון Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 עבור Windows Server 2003 ו- Windows XP עבור מערכות x86 (KB982168)
עדכון ל- ‎.NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 עבור ‎.NET Framework Assistant 1.0 x86 ‏KB963707
עדכון Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 ו- .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 עבור Windows Server 2003 ו- Windows XP x86 (KB982524)

1. What was your hardware problem and how was it fixed? Net framework is only required by a few programs.

2. Go into add/remove programs and try uninstalling all versions of net framework listed. Then only download and install the version of net framework required to run your programs.

The only way I could fix this same problem was to uninstall all the .NET frameworks, then install only 1.1 and 3.5.

Work backward from the service packs and patches, starting with 3.5sp1, in Add/Remove Programs.
Cant remove a version? Use the dotnetfx cleanup tool. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2005/04/08/406671.aspx
Keep working backwards until all the busted frameworks are uninstalled.
Don't forget to reboot every so often.

To reinstall:

All you really need is 1.1 and 3.5sp1. Why? 3.5sp1 includes 2.0 and 3.0 as well.
So. Install 1.1, then reboot.
Install 3.5sp1, then reboot.
Go to Windows Update to download any updates and patches. Reboot if needed.
Voila! Fixed!

.NET frameworks are a pain. AMD requires them to install their Catalyst video suite. When I built my latest system, I had to install Windows XP SP1, then SP2 and SP3. Then I had to activate the OS, because .NET frameworks won't install on non-activated builds. Then I had to install the .NET frameworks, and update them, and only then could I actually install my video drivers! :(

I was also having problems with my Windows XP. Sleep mode would not work and frequently the master boot record would get corrupted requiring me to re-clone the hard drive from my master drive.

I solved the problem by buying Windows 7 64-bit from a local dealer. As far as I am concerned Windows XP is a dying operating system.

You could do what quite a few people do and set that particular update to ignore.
If it's the update I'm thinking of it is a fairly common issue.

If MBR frequently disappears on your Windows XP OS then something else was obviously the problem and not Windows XP OS.You probably did something wrong.

Every operating system is a dying operating system if you do not know how to use it properly.
I know many people who say Windows XP sucks and that it's dying just because it doesn't install drivers for you like Windows 7 mostly does.
And that's just stupid lol.I mean how hard is it to install the drivers lol...

As for the Microsoft .NET framework,I only have Microsoft .NET framework 1.0 installed simply because I develop programs in 1.0.
I do not have any others installed simply because all my programs do not need .NET framework at all and like I already said,I have only 1.0 becuase I use it to make programs.
There is really no point in installing them all if you do not need them in the first place.
Unless if they are of course a part of the operating system. In that case you do not have to remove them.Just leave them the way they are.
