Windows xp on windows 98 help

Hi One of my friends has asked me to work on there computer. He has imported palm pilot data that cant be backed up. He wants windows xp on there. I am wondering if i try to install windows xp will it delete 98. I know i can partion some space but if there is another way of just upgrading it and keeping the same programs that would be great. Please Help. Thanks

It should be able to delete the windows 98se, has long as you got the upgrade version. If not then you can simply boot to msdos and then format the hard drive.

The following is for when you have the full version and not the upgrade verison.
1) restart the computer.
2) put a start-up disk in the a drive
3) check to see if "a:\" is there.
4) then type format c:
