I recently built a new computer, and amd athlon 3.4 with a gigabyte motherboard, and a 250 gig hardrive. the Bios reads the 250 gigs, but when I installed xp it only reads 130 gigs. This doesnt seem right. Is there an update I need to install?

1. You need SP1
2. Your partitions will still be limited to 127GB or so. (so make more partitions)

Thanks, I installed sp1, how do i go back and create more partitions. Will I need to go back and reinstall xp and the sp1 or can I just add partitions now that sp1 is installed. Thanks again.

Without 3rd party software like Partition Magic you will need to reinstall XP if you want to create more than one partition.

..But I believe the point of installing SP1 was to allow the OS to recognize all 250gigs with only one partition.

you can use windows server install disk to format the drive so that you have 1 250gb partition

you can create more partitions without reinstalling windows...

control panel>admin tools>computer management>storage>disk management

it will show you how much you currently have partitioned then it will have a little box that says "unpartitioned space" then click "format" and it will ask you what file system

no and you shouldn't do it. it makes it impossible to update windows if theres only enough space for the windows installation. It would keep viruses out though since they install to the system32 file. but I don't think its possible.

Delete Partition

I had this problem yesterday and I was able to delete the partition ,using the original boot drive disk management and repartition using the entire 200GB.
I have service pack 2 installed though I don't see why it would be necessary with XP.

THanks for all your help, I ended up creating a second partition using these instructions

control panel>admin tools>computer management>storage>disk management
Thanks Picklee

However, I didnt create a primary partition, instead i created an extended partition, does this make a difference, is one better thant the other?
it reads as an extended partition Logical drive.
Thanks again.

You cannot have more than one primary partition so that makes things easier :) You can make an extended partition to hold the rest of the space and then logical partitions within that extended partition if you want to segment data :)
