Doing a new build, nothing major. I have a a copy of Vista Ultimate with two licenses I havent used yet and a copy of Win XP Pro with a single license I havent used yet. I am also considering the Win 8 release preview?

So which one would you go with? I am leaning toward XP for stability but wouldnt mind trying Win 8 either.

Thanks
J

Windows 7 Professional, better than both the options.

I run Win 7 Pro on 2 of my three laptops and one of my Desktops. However, I am going with one of the options I have as I dont want to spend more money on another 7 Pro license. BTW, I disagree that Win 7 Pro is better than XP, having been using Windows since 3.1, XP is definitely the most stable operating system MS has ever launched.

Vista would be the better option if you want 64-bit support.

You don't want to use Windows 8.

I agree with this (Vista). But I have never used Vista Ultimate, wonder how stable it is compared to XP or even 7. I have used Vista Home Premium. I used it to replace ME on an older Laptop, after about a week of nothing but problems, I reloaded the RD and went back to ME.

No wonder Vista was unstable if you used it on a laptop designed for Me. You can't blame Vista for being unstable on a massively under-powered laptop really.

Vista Ultimate is fine once it's all updated, it's just like any other edition of Vista really, just with a few more toys. Update it to SP2 and be good with it.

Vista is by far the worst OS made recently. Win 7 is the most stable. What are you guys sniffing?

Windows 7 isn't an option for him, he said he only has licenses for Vista or XP. I'd take Vista over XP. Vista's fine once you get it updated - don't know what your problem is with it. Sure it was pretty poor to begin with, but driver support has definitely improved and it's much more stable now. Vista has better 64-bit support too, may be useful.

It's just an opinion.

Vista, we know you love vista ;)

He didn't quite say that though did he? He said he has a vista and xp licence, but you took it a step further and said he doesn't have the Win 7 option which is not correct.

Choice in order:

Win 7
Win 8
XP
VIsta

He said he didn't want to buy an additional license for Windows 7, he said he already has Windows XP and Vista Ult. licenses.

But I agree with you, Windows 7 Pro is better than both. I don't love Vista, it's just I prefer it to XP. I find XP so old and clunky these days it's unbelievable. I wouldn't take either in a heartbeat, but given the choice, Vista for me. I'd take both over Windows 8 though, Windows 8 is just a horrible POS.

To be honest it's all just down to personal preference. Sounds to me like Tanker likes XP, don't install an OS you hate.

Ok then, but seriously in that case, install win 8 and use the non crap interface. XP is ancient now and pretty rubbish.

You can try the Window 8 preview.
The hardware is enough for running it.
Windows Xp could not support all
the latest hardware.
The 16G ram would be wasted by 32 bit system.
