Windows XP preinstalled

I've just bought a laptop with Windows XP preinstalled, but there was no cd included. Is this legal? Should I contact the retailer incase it was an oversight by them? It was advertised as having Windows XP, but it seems a bit dodgy that I don't have a backup cd, or serial number. What happens if I ever need to run the setup program, which has happened to me quite often in the past with viruses etc.

Yes it is legal.

The serial number should be underneath the laptop on the Certificate of authenticity sticker.
If not then you should contact whoever you get the laptop off.

I had Windows Xp home edition pre-instaled on my Hp computer and usualy you would get a recovery partion on the hard drive just incase you ever need to do a system recovery.

Although you can buy the system recovery cd off the manufacturer.

I just made my own recovery cd.

You should also check all your software offerings to see if there's an option to burn an XP recovery disc specific to your machine that you can then use to boot and reinstall with. I've seen HP's eMachines and Compaq's that offer this.
