Windows XP Pro - download

I have a toshiba laptop about 3 years old, running windows xp pro, which came pre-installed and I have either lost or was not issued with the windows cd rom, I have the key sticker still located under the computer.

Just recently it will not start up and comes up with the error;
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

From my research on the web it seems to be a fairly common fault but the cure seems to be quite complicated, I am happy to attempt this but have been unable to find a free download.

Can anyone please advise me of a remedy or location to find this download.

I have critical data on this laptop and will have to resort to buying another copy if absolutely neccessary, but still not sure if I may loose the data currently saved on the PC if I do so anyway.

I'm in Sydney Australia, where are you located and what is the best time to call if i need to.
Have you had this same error / issue?
Where you able to successfully repair without loosing data???

Thanks for the links but not really any help, i got a hotfix that may be helpful if I could actually get my laptop to power up, but unnfortunately it doesn't get that far and I cant even run a chkdsk in dos because it freezes up.

Still stuck.
 
I also have a Toshiba Tecra L2, I had that problem. I don't know what I did EXACTLY but I navi-d my way around and eventually it worked. I had a XP Disc though.
 
Thanks mate, I have resolved to purchasing a new copy of XP Pro and will see how it goes, will be on my to do list tomorrow. It's amazing how you can't down load this software as it seems to be quite a common fault, and so often now this software is all pre-installed before you get your gear...
 
Be sure to download all the proprietary laptop drivers from the Toshiba website.
