for some reason after it goes threw the copy files and restarts it comes back as disk read error. Its done this twice with two different hard drives any advice or anybody know why or what to do ? thanks
What type of hard drive would be a better question? ide or sata? If you trying to install Windows on a sata drive you will need to first create a driver disk for the sata drivers for either the onboard sata controllers or the controller card used. As soon as the first screen appears the option to load sata drivers will state press the F6 key for the installer to read and load the drivers from the floppy or even cd-r they are burned to.
Thanks, I got pass that problem, now theres a new problem. Did some reserch found out its a video card problem, the drivers. Is there anyway to delete the drivers so windowws an find them its self. windows is not up and running yet so I can't do anything threw windows.
When going to install Windows you have the option of deleting any previous installation found. That will delete the current Windows, Documentsandettings, and Program Files directories right off of the drive. Manually trying to move around with a dos looking but not dos command prompt is a little harder in XP. If you have nothing to save off of the drive at this time you can also delete the existing primary and create a brand new one using the installer.
Once you get past the press enter now to install Windows or press R for recovery console screen you then choose the "L" for delete existing installation option after selecting the 1# C:\Windows detected at that time. You'll see it there. On the next screen you then press the "D" for delete and answer yes when prompted for confirmation.
From there you simply restart the installer again to select the drive seen in the first screen with a total of the available drive space that can be reduced or left at the total for a single primary. Once confirmed the installer will create the new primary and format that in preparation of copying the setup files to the drive. After doing this once or twice you will have this down in memory.
