Hi I got this laptop here

http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=X83VB-X2-PB-R&cpc=SCH

and i was wondering which OS would be the best to put on it?

it already has vista 64bit, but i HATE vista and want something that will be the fastest. I love xp, but i'm also keen to try windows 7.

I want to know should i get windows xp pro 64bit? or windows 7 64bit?

and is it correct i need a 64bit version to utilize all 4gigs of ram?

I will be doing lots of video editing, gaming (DOOM 3), and web surfing (youtube/news).

Go with 7.

EDIT- Sorry, I had more to say, but I had to go. Yes, you need 64 bit as well to use all of your RAM. I like XP, but they are phasing that out, so 7 is your best bet.

Go with windows 7 64bit.

You'll want to learn how to use msconfig as well as disable services and most importantly search indexing, these things will help keep memory usage down and system speed up.

Programs like CCleaner and Defraggler will also help.

Yes u will need 64 bit as it you use 32 bit your avaliable RAM will come up with either 3 GB or 3.2 GB if you have 4gb... i think.

But yes, I've had the debate in my head about weather to switch too Win7 from WinXP and i'm still uncertain - but in your case i'd go with Win7 - Microsoft is slowly making things uncompatible with WinXP now, starting with Internet Explorer 9 which is kind of saddening, becuase in someways - its an end of the line for, probably, the best Microsoft OS of all time in my opinion :(

Thanks

you can run both via dual boot. That, IMO, is a better setup than either on their own. Some programs, like CNC:the first decade, do not run on 7 but do on xp. If you have both, the security of 7 and the compatibilty of XP.

This is the setup that I use, and I stay in XP most of the time. You will have to install XP first in order to have the right bootmanager when both are on.
