Windows Xp Problem!

I went round to my mates house today and he asked me to have a look at his computer because it wouldn't let him log on. So, sure, why not. When i go to log him on a small box pops up with an 'ok' button on, so i clicked it and it logged him off! I haven't got a clue what to do so i am just going to format his hd and reinstall windows.
If anybody knows why this is happening or can persuade me that there is a way to fix it without formatting his hd, feel free to tell me, although it will have to be sometime tonight or early tommorow morning (about 12hrs after the thread has started). Thanx

Have you tried logging on in Safe Mode?

Press F8 when Windows is starting up and choose Safe Mode and see if you can log on there.

Oh, dam i completely forgot. I'll try that tommorow thanx.

He has Windows Xp Pro. His brother also uses his computer and has a seperate log in account.

Okay i tried to log in in safe mode and an error saying C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\BROWSEUI.DLL is not a valid image file! Should i just plug his hd in my computer and copy the file from my hd to his because it doesnt find the error in chkdsk?

The file isn't missing because i plugged it in to my pc as a slave drive and the file is there!

Yes i could do that i suppose, but could i copy the file from my hd to his or not? and why?
