Windows XP Repair - Admin Password Lost?

Hi,

Trying to fix my friends computer and went to do the 'chkdsk/r' and it is asking for the Administrator Password, and my friend doesnt know it.

Any idea of what I can do?

Reformat and start over

There are many programs available that will allow you to reset the Admin Password on the system. But to spend the money on software could be defeating the purpose unless the data on the system are things you just can't live without loosing (always remember to backup your important files). Otherwise I would have to agree with AlienMenace, if you're just trying to fix problems, then formatting the disk and starting with a fresh install of the OS could solve the problem.

Reformatting is the only way (legally), and not against this forum's rules.

EDIT - Upon further thought, if it IS indeed his computer, everytime he turns the computer on he'll need the password. The very same and only. If he doesn't know it, it isn't his computer.
