When I turn on my computer, everything is fine. But when I try to run ANY programs,it shuts off.It usually isn't right away, but when it does, it's without warning. Here's the story:

Last year, my vaio crashed.I copied the hard drive and put it in a dell.Ever since,my computer has frequently turned off,not run sam and max season one, and altogether,a REAL NUISANCE!:gun: I just need help.PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE!

Hi Samnmaxman. Welcome to Computer Forum.

Last year, my vaio crashed.I copied the hard drive and put it in a dell.
Explain to us how you went about that. If you just put your existing Windows installation from the Vaio to the Dell, then you would have needed to download all new drivers for the mobo, graphics - well, everything - this is certainly NOT the ideal way to "move into" a new system - rather you should have backed up your personal data (music, pictures, documents etc) and then installed Windows from CD to the new computer, reinstalled all of your old programs and then copied your data back to the drive.

So that may be your problem. I would back up all of your personal data, and then do a fresh and full installation of Windows onto the Dell. Then check the Dell site for your current drivers.

Also, did you move any hardware from the Sony to the Dell? Or is the Dell all new hardware? Either way, some hardware may be failing. If you just leave the computer running and idling, does it shut off? Or is everything fine as long as you don't run anything?

Try a reinstall first, and if it continues to fail, we'll investigate further.

As stated above, it's not the right way of doing it. If a re-install is out of the question you could put your OS disc in and "repair" your install, this will attempt to match your new hardware with the OS.

Everything is fine when I don't run anything. It is almost all new hardware except the graphics card, and I am in the process of doing a fresh install.

Does it shutdown when you run ANY program? Or just video games?

I would say try doing a fresh install like the gentleman before me suggested, if this does not work then I believe you have a hardware problem. It sounds like your power supply could be failing, when you run a video game, more power is drawn from the power supply and if the power supply is on its way out then i will shut off completely when it is stressed too much.

I would also recommend doing a fresh install right away to determine if this is the problem because if it is the power supply failing, it can take out other hardware components when it fries completely and you of course would like to avoid this.

So far, here are the programs that I know shut it off:sun vm virtualbox, internet explorer, windows picture viewer, and golden records.

Sam and Max has an unfixable registry error as far as I know.

Have you tried reinstalling?

if its not showing the dell logo he wont beable to install that means its not posting.

if its not posting you can try and remove ram and maybe the ram went bad thats causing it not to post, id start with ram maybe try a dif psu

if its not virus problem then try one of these options. 1. try to boot from cd go to repair option and run check disk(scandisk) may be it hard drive problem and the try to clean ram slots, re-insert RAM. before replacing SMPS

You got a bad hard drive, your vaio crashes on you and you put the hard drive directly into another computer, It was bound to crash. My guess is eithe bad sector or you got a virus on it somewhere.

thereve been problems for me logging in here, sorry. So anyway, now I have another new computer

ps:fresh install didn't work, turned itself off when i navigated to my videos.
