Windows XP - very slow at starting up programs

when i switch my pc on and click on say, internet explorer, it takes sometimes 20 minutes to actually open internet explorer, why is this? and how can I fix it.

Its not slow in launching programs. Its slow in booting. Just because it shows the normal cursor and you can click on stuff does not mean you've finished booting. Thats how MS managed to do the 20second boot when in fact they've just run eveyrthing else in the background and made it look like its finished :)

this is kinda the same. my family had a real crappy 4 year old hp pavillion, recntly it started taking hours to boot and pprogams took awhile to load, we had 384 mb ram. we just gave up and got a new computer but im still curious what was wrong. i think it may have had to do with to little wattage because we we started cramming stuff in there like a cd writer more ram, new hd(the psu was only 100W)

More importantly:
- Whats the CPU speed?
- Are you running the drives in PIO mode?
256MBs should be plenty for a menial task like that although i suspect that its the classic case of "WXP looks like its finished booting but nowhere near done"

What's CPU speed?
how fast is ur cpu

and PIO mode?
To ensure your drives are operating in DMA mode: (1) Control Panel, (2) System, (3) Goto the Hardware Tab, (4) Device Manager, (5) IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, (6) Right Click on Primary IDE Channel --> Properties, (7) Goto the Advanced Settings Tab, Make sure both drop down boxes say 'DMA if Available', Click OK,(8) Right Click on Seconady IDE Channel --> Properties, (9) Goto the Advanced Settings Tab, Make sure both drop down boxes say 'DMA if Available', Click OK, (10) Reboot.

The drives are operating in DMA mode. I don't know the CPU speed. A friend of mine said her computer had been going slow because it was overheating, could this be the case? Just a thought.

How much ram can we install. cuz i was thinking of getting the 1GB DDram and installing 2 of that. would the board support that....

im guessing you have NEVER wiped the HD on that computer, probably havent updated BIOS, drivers, cleaned out old downlloads, defragged, or any of that if its a family computer. that will all dampen performance.

well to wipe the HD i run a program called WDCLEAR, but that will totally wipe your drive. so i'd backup any stuff u want to keep. Go to yuor motherbords manufacturer website and search for lateest updates for your boards BIOS. they will have step by step instructions on how to do it. windows update for drivers or search for them on your own from there websites.

20 minutes or 20 seconds? lol if its not the latter i could go and take a dump and come back and is still loading.
