Windows XP video problem.

I am having a small problem with my video with filetypes like .avi and .mpeg. Everytime I play a video doesn't matter what size or video and it doesn't matter what codec or player (Winamp, Windows Media Player it only shows the bottom right side of the video and clips everything else. Very furstrating indeed!

First I thought it could have been DirectX (Altho I don't have very much understanding for it other than knowing it is an API built into Windows.) But Quicktime files play perfectly fine and it uses DirectDraw (Or atleast I think it does, correct me if I am wrong. Also if you want to know I am useing DirectX 9.0c)

What is the name of your Video Card and its technical specs? (Right-click on desktop, properties, settings tab, you'll see the name.) Once you know the name and make of your card, go to it's official company website (use Google to find), and download the newest drivers. Install them and it may fix your display problem. Post back if you need more help.

Codecs? Maybe media player settings are not right, then again, there might be some corruption of media players, of video files, or of the hard drive or operating system. I assume your computer is clean of spyware and viruses....so can you run check disk to see if there are any disk errors?

If no, then can you try different codecs? Or download codecs/update/re-install players with plug-ins...etc.?

Tried everything you suggested, even before I posted. Tried diffrent codecs, I even tried diffrent sound codecs. I caved in yesterday and just did a format and reinstall. Thanks for the help! =)

You're welcome. I guess if all you did didn't solve the problem, then a reformat was the way to go. (After more than 2 years of conventional use, my OS ran very crappy until I re-installed fresh.) :)

Sounds like a codec collision or sorts :) I made a quick note about a good codec configuration here http://www.hazza.dsl.pipex.com/faq.htm
