yea...i have a 500gb external drive and my Windows Xp Sp2 will not boot with it plugged in. Its a buffalo 500gb external. It has a feature so i can keep plugged in all the time but it will turn on similtanueasly witht he computer. It has 2 leds, one for power, and one for access. I fi have it plugged in, my windows xp will just stay stuck on its logo screen with the bar loading up...u knw.

any suggestions on what to do?

btw, i already uninstalled the drive through device manager, and reinstalled and stuff and the legacy usb suppotrt in the bios has been toggled: it didnt work with oit enabled, or it disabled.

go to the bios and set the boot to be cd drive first then hard drive. dont put the usb-hd as first... i think that should do it

naw, it didnt, it is set like this:

1, Harddrive
2, cd drive
3, removable
4,nothing is set here

If you pull the USB plug from the drive it will more than likely work. Turn off legacy USB support in the BIOS and it will solve the problem.

How do I get into BIOS to change settings?

even though its not ur thread, ill help u out:

1. boot up computer.
2. usually u press the delete key during the post msg, or when the dell or emahcines or gateway logo comes up. if its not the delete key, look for writing where it should say to enter BIOS.
3. dude im just joking ur welcome on my threads anytime ;)

****bumpsta****

but either way, i think its time to reformatt and reinstall...another good hour an 1/2 wasted

Thanks Vizy. I thought it would be better to post here than make a new thread as this was about the BIOS anyway
