Ok so i downgraded my laptop from Windows vista home premium to Windows XP SP2. The laptop is a Compaq CQ60-417DX. I have loaded network and wifi drivers. The computer is not detecting my modem. When i go to device manager everything is there except for my modem. The only devices in the Other Devices category are PCI device, and video controller. I am not worried about the video controller right now as i am using a VGA driver which is working fine. I think the PCI device is my audio but im not sure. Its vendor id is 8086 and the device is 293E. If anyone tells me to download something please try to keep it under 20 MB because i am on dial-up, but if necessary i can download something up to about 30 MB. Please reply quick as i want to get this fixed soon. Just so you know this laptop is an intel celeron 2.19 GHZ and 3GB of ram. Thanks ahead of time!!!

Hi forumuser,

I assume you have a wireless modem..? Otherwise you mean it is not detecting your wireless router.

I don't think Device Manger can help you, but rather you should be looking in Network Connections.

Right click on your Wireless Connection and click View Available Wireless Networks, and look for your modem or your router and try to connect.

Let us know how that goes. ;)

Little more explination i guess.

Sorry for the misunderstanding but i do not use a wireless connection to the internet. I use dialup so i use a dialup modem. So Windows XP cant find my dial up modem and that is the problem.

Aha - you threw me off with the wifi drivers comment...

I would try going to Device Manager and delete anything under Ports (COM & LPT) that s on a communications port. Then got to Action-->Scan for Hardware Changes and see if it detects the modem.

The device that refers to vendor 8086 and device 293e is actually part of your high definition audio. But it may actually be your modem driver as well if they are bundled together. Try this driver and see if it will work, only 6.75 mb.
