Windows XP won't install windows updates

When running the Automatic update for Windows XP, I cannot install any downloaded updates. The error reports
"Updates were unable to be successfully installed"
 
a while back, i tried installing sp2, and the install just hung for some reason, and ever since that happened, i was unable to install any updates, i had to completely reformat my computer, and reinstall windows, because my system was 1/2 sp1 and 1/2 sp2........

an interesting conundrum

under system information, it said my system was windows xp sp2, but when i tried to install dx9, it told me no go because i didn't have sp2........

windows can be a pita
