I am going to be starting my first build soon. I'm looking on newegg.com at the windows xp OS. There are numerous ones. Which ones would work. Some seem like upgrade discs, but im starting with nothing on the harddrive (obviously). Also, is there a certain procedure that must be followed to properly install windows on a new harddrive, I've only tried one other time but wasn't successful.

Look at the price.
Cheaper ones are usually Upgrade ver. or OEM ver.
If you are home user I don't think you'll need Pro ver.
Go to M$ website and check the differences between Home and Pro.
You just start up with cd in the cdrom and off you go.
First check the BIOS setting and make sure that cdrom is set as a first device to boot from.

So avoid OEM versions i take it when starting fresh
