Windows XP

Hey guys, a couple months back I had to reinstall windows xp pro on my upstairs computer. I couldn't access the computer at all, after the windows startup screen came and went I got the blue screen crap. So I ended up losing all my photo's and assignments and stuff. Is there anyway to get that back or is it gone forever? I hear a lot of stuff about people hacking in to other peoples computers that were sold/given to them and end up finding some secret stuff and what not. Just a question- Thanks.

As far as getting your photos and other types of files retrieved there are data recovery programs, some freewares, some retail as well as professional data recovery services. It depends on the route you decide to take. For direct file transfer you can also slave the present drive you are having problems in another case for copying to and maybe burning data dvds there. Then you would be free to perform a repair install of Windows(Best move), a deletion of the current installation if the repair option isn't available(still preserves files abd folders other then the ones created by Windows), or the last option usually unnecessary of wiping the drive entirely(stupid move there).

Why didn't put your drive in another system? It might not be able to boot but your data should still be on there. As far as data recovery goes, if you really want to you can extract data from a burnt drive, depends on how desperate the person trying to get your data is.

hey, I'm not worried about anyone else getting the files, I would like to retrieve them, just don't know how to do it!

The fastest way is to either install it as a second drive in another case or use an external usb type drive bay to copy files onto another drive directly. Another method for copying files from one drive to another is by the use of a live for cd Linux distro like Knoppix or ubuntu. This is done when one drive cannot be used to access the partition(s) on another. That is more for experienced users there however.
