Greetings all
My name is Jake
I've been having a highly frustrating issue, of which I've been trying to solve for days. I've talked to everyone I know, visited the retailers whom I purchased my parts and software from (who also assembled my hardware), along with browsing through however many message boards for answers to no avail.
I recently bought a new computer, all new except the monitor. I'm running Windows 7 Professional. Everything seems to be running fine, until I install the latest NVidia drivers for my card (GTX 460). Upon restart after installation, Windows freezes up every time at the Windows 7 splash introduction screen. I then boot in Safe Mode, uninstall the drivers, and am able to boot normally once again, however are thus stuck using Standard VGA which won't let me run any other resolution other than 800x600, along with the obvious disadvantage of not being able to run my video card at full capacity.
I have tried just about everything I or anyone I know can think of: swapping around video cards, different power supplies, triple checking everything is fitted properly and connected to power correctly. I've taken it to the retailer, they have checked everything and said it's either the hard drive or the operating system; since then I have reinstalled countless times on a range of hard drives including one which is brand new. I'm using a legitimate copy of Windows 7 Professional.
I've updated Windows completely as far as I know (when I search for updates in the start menu it says I'm up to date). I've run the installation disc for my motherboard. I've tried installing older Nvidia packages, the latest Nvidia packages, the package that came with my card on disc. I've tried leaving it for hours to see if it's just taking ages to boot after installing Nvidia drivers.
I've tried running Driver Sweeper in normal boot and Safe Mode boot, and reinstalling Nvidia fresh after that, as well as a bunch of other long-shot obscure ideas... the list goes on.
System:
Windows 7 64bit (yes I've made sure everything I've installed is 64 bit)
Gigabyte P55-USB3 Motherboard
Intel i5 2.8 Quadcore
G.Skill 4G Ram
Nvidia GTX 460
Monitor: ViewSonic VX2025wm (native resolution: 1680x1050)
Nothing seems to work. It's driving me crazy; I've never had such great difficulty in not only getting a computer up and running, but just narrowing down the source of a problem, such that it's getting to the point where I'm so tired and disheartened that I'm about ready to just give up - but that's enough of my sob story!
Anyway... has anyone run into this problem or perhaps have any ideas of how I might find a solution? I'd greatly appreciate any help!
Thanks kindly
