:o Hi,

Im curious to use another 'Windows' though old and seemingly disliked. I couldn't get it to accept the product key on the old compaq it came with, which is now in need of a new HDD (I went inside and basically broke it) . & its giving me a error message on my c500 compaq notebook."the app. is trying to directly connect with the HDD and needs to be setup w/ ms-dos command prompt, it doesnt read @ startup and im unsure how to open the ms-dos and what commands to use.

Did WinMe expire? if not, would it still get recent windows updates?

Also, If i may have formatted the disc( if even possible) would that be the problem and anyway to restore the files? I dont think so since i can explore the disc and see the drivers, tools, etc. folder.....

Any Answers, Suggestions?

Did your compaq have a windows sticker on it? if so check it for the key. if not you would be better off with windows 7/ or a new laptop..

I doubt W7 would run even remotely smooth on a system that originally came with WinME, if at all.

Anyway, Tony, as much as I understand a desire to just toy around with an older OS for fun, I'd recommend against using WinME. IMO, the only good thing ME gave us was their boot disc option. Do you have access to 98 or 98SE to use instead?

As for ME, it's possible that the Drive isn't formatted correctly. If you're able to make a ME boot disc, I'd do so and boot to it. Once there, use Fdisk and you can play around with the partitions and formats. I'd give more info if I could, but it's been ages since I've had to do that.

Well,

I wont be using the old Compaq that WinMe came with because I am void of working HDDrives. OOps I made them even worse by opening them and unscrewing the parts. But i am on a lower-end but fun Compaq c500 notebook and I was doing restores and formatts and was curious to use WinMe instead of the Vista that the notebook came with. I couldn't get it to work so I am using Vista which is A-Okay. I also have an Emachines T3256 or 65 With windows Xp and restore cd's but no OS Cd. But the Hdd on that has the same story.... Could i get The WinXp from the Emachines restore cd and use it on another Comp.?

I would strongly suggest to upgrade to Windows 7.

I doubt very seriously a notebook running Windows ME would even get windows 7 to install since its such an old notebook. There wouldn't be enough ram to even run windows 7.

Like said if you want to fool around with a older OS, find a 98SE or 2000 CD. ME was nothing but a overbloated 98.

Kinda like Vista is to Windows 2000.:P Had to get that one in there.
