Wiping Malicious Software from a Flash Drive

I am attempting to fix someone's laptop that is infested with malicious software. I used a flash drive to transfer some files from the laptop then I formatted it. If a flash drive has a quick format done on it would it wipe any potential malicious software off the drive?

In theory yes, just like all data would be gone but some could be recoverable.

In the sense that the malicious software could reinfect you, NO.
