Wired computer to computer file transfer?

My moms laptop has virtumonde viruses that I cannot get rid of so I am going to reinstall, but I need to get her files. I do not have an external drive anymore so was going to try and hook it up by Ethernet to another computer. Would an ethernet switch work for this, or a router? And how would I set it up within windows? The laptop is xp, the computer being transferred to is vista.

The easiest would be to use a router with a built in DHCP server. Just plug both computers into it and make sure they have the same workgroup in network properties. You would then just share the folders you want to copy.

Be careful on what you transfer over if a virus is involved, profile files can be dangerous.

Depends on what you have available to determine whats easiest. It's possible to do it either way, you could also use a crossover cable to connect the two directly. I'm not 100% sure on this, but most NICs today are suppose to be smart of to know what type of cable you need. So if you plug a straight through directly into 2 computers and set the IP config and workgroup correctly they should see each other. Like I said never done it personally, but it should be possible

I guess your post is useful, but would this be spam considering he seems to own that store?

If one of the computers is relatively new, its NIC should have Auto MDI-X capabilites. Just use a run of the mill straight through cable between the two computers. No switch, no router, no crossover, just normal cable. As always, make sure you have an active antivirus running while copying files, it should actively scan the files as you copy them so that you don't make the problem worse by copying over a virus infected file.
