Wired Networking nightmare...!

wellhellothere

Hi!

I've just decided to switch to wired networking instead of wireless, for various reasons.

You'd have thought this would be simple and straight forward - i've plugged in my ethernet cable into the router (thats already running one pc on the internet), turned on my pc, and nothing!!

Theres no response what so ever.

This leads me to think its either - my network card/drivers??? (dont really know much about this)

or...

the router. I doubt this though, its almost new, its one of the ones virgin supply with their cable packages. If anyone can tell me whats going on, it'd be greatly appreciated! Thanks!! :)

(edit: the titles bold anyway, oops!)

Hi

Hi There. I dont know if this is applies to your situation or not, but when I set up my Wireless Connection and the Icon is saying its connected down by the clock, on my Wired LAN Connection , I usually disable that to make it disappear from the notification area .

so might be worth going into the Network Connections and having a look to see if its enabled. :)

hmm, interesting. My problem is though, no matter what i do, when i plug in the ethernet cable into my pc, it shows no signs of recognising its gone in. My network connections are ....
Wireless Network Connection 2 (the wireless one im using at the moment)
1394 Connection

They're both listed as high speed or LAN connections. I cant seem to get it to recognise just the wired connection...

Sounds like you don't have the driver installed for your lan card. Look in device manager and see what it lists under network adapters. You probably have an item that needs a driver or something listed as unknown device.

download the drivers off your mobo's website. +1 for goind wired, i got a 150ft cat6 cable running downstairs to my pc and i get 27mbps on speedtest.net

Strangely - i have a LAN connection on my mobo, infact i have two, but in device manager i cant seem to find it. Under Network Adapters i have '1394 net adapter', and 'Belkin USB Wireless Utility'.

Interestingly theres an 'Unknown Device' under 'other devices'... is this relevant?

Obviously im struggling to download drivers because i dont know what to look for. If it helps, my motherboard is an Asus, A8N Sli-Premium.

Thanks a lot!

Yes that is your lan card.

Im beginning to think i dont even have a lan card on this motherboard. I tried downloading and installing the drivers off that site, but to no luck - still got the same problem.

Also, that 'Unknown Device' i mentioned, claims its on the PCI bus, (presumably LAN is nothing to do with PCI). Still no sign of any driver under Network Adapters either. Looks like i'll be buying a network card.

Still - i find it a bit weird that the mobo has 2 lan connections, that arent supported by any drivers

Thanks for all the help so far! :)

Go back into device manager and right click on the unknown device and click on properties, then click on the details tab. post back what it says for the vendor and device ID's, they are both 4 digit numbers/letters. With that we can track down exactly what the device is.

Unknown Device

Device Type: Other Devices
Manufacturer: Unknown
Location: on PCI bus

Device Status

The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28)

Device Instance Id

ACPI\ATK0110\1010110

then there's a whole load of other details in the drop down menu in the Details tab.

Hope thats some help

Thanks for the driver!

As for the adapter, strangely enough it was Disabled in my bios. I thought i'd cured the problem by enabling it, but no joy. Now when i boot up i get a message saying that the LAN cable isnt connected properly. Obviously i've checked several times that it is....

So are we thinking my adapter is broken?

Thanks for all the help john!

Check to make sure that the driver is installed properly, and the correct driver. I've seen in the past that windows loads an incorrect driver and you get the network cable is disconnected error until you install the right driver. If it shows disconnected, I would start by either using a different port on the router or use a different ethernet cable to rule that out as well.

Ok, i've managed to get the pc itself to recognise the cable (its stopped saying LAN Cable Fail on boot up), so it must be down to the drivers.

I tried installing the latest driver off that asus site you posted, but it doesnt seem to have worked. Running out of ideas!

What does device manager say for the network adapter? Does it say its running properly? No errors in device manger? Have you tried a different cable. Do you still get the network cable disconnected error?
