...so when it comes to networking, I know nothing. I mean, I can build you a nice computer and fix some issues...but if its needing to be networked, and my 1 or 2 tricks dont work...I scream for help.
here is the current setup:
I have an office on my main floor, where two desktops remain
my verizon router resides there for my FIOS internet, Its an actiontec router, and I only use that for the fiber connection from verizon, the wifi is off and its plugged into my netgear router, thats wireless N, and thats what my actual 'router' is.
upstairs, I have a design/game/ and soon to be home theater room.
I have a desktop computer, 360, and two netbooks I usually keep in there.
Im getting some new stuff in there, including a blu ray player and tv with internet capable hookup, and maybe a Set top box or two (home brew style, apple tv, vudu, etc.)
the desktop never works online. its constantly getting disconnected (old gateway on xp home. with a new netgear card, wireless N, and I bought an extended antenna, to get better signal strength) and going offline. then I cant get it to find my network.
Here is what I want/need
I would like to essentially (netbooks aside) to have a "wired" setup in that room. I think what I want is like...a wireless switch? or an access point?
basically, a box with like, 5 or 6 ethernet ports, that, when I plug a device into it, it acts like a wired connection, without having to run the hard cable. the 'box' would communicate to my router downstairs and make whatever is connected to this "box" online.... "wirelessly"
the reason I brought up the netbooks, is because ive heard that access points can be 'found' under a wireless network and can be connected too... could it be this access point can connect wired and wireless devices to the router I have downstairs(hence making this media room have its own sort of little network)
so my question is, what do i need and how do I do it?
