Wireless at friends

Ok i have a little problem i took my moms laptop to my friends house to do studing for a project and i got signal and it said that i had connected and everything but i coudnt get on the internet or anything... i was sitting about 5 feet from the wireless router and i still coundt connect... he has an un secure network that anyone can get to... any ideas thanks

Make sure your computer is listed on the network or picked up on the router, also make sure there is no IP conflict on the network, there are many things that could happen, also he may have permissions set on the router by default.
