wireless gaming

i have just moved into a new apartment and my room doesn;t have a cable plug in so i was thinking about switching to wireless gaming. i have a belkin wireless N router. and thinking about buying a N draft receiver. i was wondering if this is a good idea or fast enough for gaming? or should i just pay the cable company to install a plug in? anyone have good experience with wireless games online? would this be fast enough? i usually play bf2 and quake. thanks guys
 
your internet connection will not be faster than your wireless network (unless you're really far away and have a very very low signal) so therefor that will be maxed out before your wireless network connection speed. So you should be fine. Although i'm not sure why you'd buy wireless N equipment right now since i don't think there is an agreed upon standard yet you'll have to watch for what is compatibale with what.
 
I'd stay away from wireless if you are going to play FPS like BF2 and quake, since it's unreliable sometimes and your ping sometimes reflects it
 
really though it depends how much background noise you have in your area as well as how far you are from the access point. if your computer won't be moving and there isn't much background noise then you'd be ok. But as Chupacabra said if you're looking for something that is as reliable as possible go with a wired connection.
 
my wireless router is right underneath from my room in my living room. i guess i was thinking about wireless gaming because i didn;t want all the wires and stuff floating around the desk. so i need more ppls input to see what is the better choice. i know wireless can never beat a wire connection but is there a hugggge different like night and day or is the wireless connection a little slower but i can still be able to play bf2 and quake? or will it be supper laggy and not worth it?
 
It'll be super laggy and sometimes it'll get ****ed and won't let you even access the web plus random DC's which will most likely kick you out of the game
 
Im on wireless (rig in sig) and i do have problems with some servers, but 80% of the time im perfectly fine on ping and what not..
 
if you are only one floor up you should be fine with wireless.
it isn/t that hard to run a wire through the wall to downstairs though. you might consider just doing that anyway
 
I've done gaming on an LOW or VERY LOW connection but it works fine on Halo Multiplayer. Course I get more lags now and then, but if the router is within around 50FT you should not notice that much of an difference...

Remember that the quality of the router + card is important. Just never buy from Encore.
 
gaming does not take a lot of bandwidth, so your internet connection being 'slower' than your wireless network does not matter. what matters in gaming is latency (ping), which even on draft-N is slow. you will be able to do it, but you will definitely have a higher latency than if you were wired.
 
thanks people for your input. i think i am going to try out the wireless connection first see how that is. since i am renting the house i am not sure if my landlord would appreciate me putting holes on the walls lol. if it is too laggy then i will just have a profession instal a cable plug in. thanks again everyone
