Wireless in Windows 98

I am attempting to connect wirelessly and have installed the Windows 98 drivers for the USB adapter. Problem is although it connects at full strength 98 still refuses to see an Internet connection? How do I get the icon depicting two computers to come up on the toolbar? I take it that must come up before I can use the Internet.

Go to the dos prompt (I think it's Start > RUN > Command ) and type ipconfig /all (or it may be winipconfig... it's slightly different in 98) Basically, I want to know your connection status. IP address, subnet, gateway, DNS, etc... If it looks ok, do you know your router/modem's IP address? Can you ping it? IE something like PING 192.168.1.1

I am going to scrap using the adapter because it appears to crash 98 after about two minutes annoyingly. I have an ethernet socket on my board and a cable to connect it up but again 98 refuses to do anything, do i need ethernet drivers?

My board is quite an old one but adaquate for 98: -
