Wireless Internet... and my security.

I am somewhat knowledged in the internet and whatnot but I've been on dialup all my life, so when I use wireless internet I don't know much about it. I generally use a public connection at the library. No WEP/WPA key or anything. Can my information be read? If so, how much danger is it in? What about passwords? What about things signing on such as MSN Messenger, xFire, etc. when I connect? If anyone could post a link to lots of information on how wireless internet works and the security issues and whatnot I'd appreciate it.

the truth if a hacker or someone who knows what they r doing wants to know what you r doing on any wireless connection encripted or not they will get it you have vista i see. it has a PUBLIC setting in the network section when you connect thats about as good as its gonna get tho

i just make it a habit to use eithernet when doing personal stuff banking stuff like that

vista has alot of great features for protection just make sure you use them and you will be ok

hope it helps

this comes from vista all in one desktop reference for dummies:
public networks include networks that you donot control airports internet cafe' hotelswhere a very real chance exist that someone else connected to it could go snooping or shove infected files into your public folder

it adds higher protection to your computer in the case that someone else connected could shove a virus into your public folder or go snooping through your files on your computer

sry for the double add my computer was being we todd did

If using wireless ensure that it is encrypted. WEP or WPA.

WPA is safer

if choosing a wep key you can have 128 or 64 bit, 128 is safer

ensure you wep key contains both number and letters, stops sick hackers
