Hi, my entire appartment building is fine with the free wireless internet but it doesnt work for me. I can connect to two wireless networks but it disconnects after 8 seconds. I run on vista and most others use XP.
I tried using a usb and a pci card. I even reinstalled windows vista from scratch because I heard that anti viruses can be problematic even after their uninstalled. Can I get some help here? Im about to pay to have my private line because I dont know how to get this connection working. Mostly what happens is I can connect to the network (green line between my computer and the network in vista) but my network has an X between its symbol and the globe in vista that represents the internet. I try diagnostics and it doesnt help.

Ok, a technitian/neighbor told me the signal is too weak. Ill have to buy a new router, the one in the building is supposedly four years old.

First off you need to make sure that your ip and dns and default gateway settings are set to automatic. You can try going to the command prompt and typing ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew. Also try resetting the router or access point that your computer connects to. It may be a weak signal, but it could very well be that your computer can't get access to the net because something is wrong. Also, I'd try and do a system restore to an earlier point or install windows updates to see if that helps. Vista is screwy sometimes, and you just have to work with it until you upgrade to 7.

hi, I now have a laptop and thats allowed me to move around in the building and i can use the net outside in the hallway closer to the router but not in my home.
The router used h technology i think. Will buying a router with n technology make a big difference?
