wireless problem

Hiya, brought a laptop from ebay a few days ago, and cannot connect to internet with wireless or wired connections, my usb adaptor is picking up siganls but not mine even from 2 feet away from router when i try to connect it straight through a wired connection (earthnet) i still cannot get online. Any ideas.:confused:
 
does that mean other peoples networks ? i have tried to connect to another signal i was picking up, and it does say that i am connected but when i open explorer it says that i am not connected.
 
Oh sorry my bad :o, I thought you were connecting though a LAN just ignore my last comment :o.

Do you know how to ping a website?
 
Ok well it's just basically sending some packets to a IP address to see if you can reach it over the network.

Here's how :) :

1. Start>Run> type in cmd

2. in the new window type ping 69.16.225.146
 
Also before i go and try that out, a quick question my an earthnet problem, when the wireless connection did not work i tried the direct earthnet connection and windows is reporting that it cannot find connection.:confused:
