Wireless Question

I just have got internet at the house, the desk top is hooked be ethernet and my laptop is wireless.
I have AT&T with a 2wire wireless modem and the wireless seems to work slower when the desk top is on internet also.

That's the only thing I can think of why it's slow.

Any other options?

All the devices on your network share the same bandwidth, so the more computers using internet at the same time will slow them all down.

Well, it will be slower if the desktop is downloading something from the internet. If the wireless is fast when the desktop pc is not downloading anything, then - yes - it's the desktop that slows it down. However, if the wireless is never really fast no matter what, then it could be an issue with the signal from the router.

Things to keep in mind are:
What is the bandwidth you subscribe to from your ISP?
Does the router support that transfer speed? Newer routers will, but older routers might not. Chances are you are fine.
Are there any physical barriers such as walls etc. that could be affecting the signal?
If the signal improves as you walk closer to the router, then you're likely dealing with physical barriers that weaken the signal.
