Wireless recievers

hi, recently i've been having issues with my computer connecting to my router. The connection drops out for about a second or so and comes back, and it does this ALL the time if i'm not continuosly browsing. My instinct tells me it's a range issue.

but neway i currently own a belkin 54mbps reciever which seems quite good, but would a better one solve this problem? Perhaps a more powerful one?

What router do you have? How far away from it is your computer? Are there any big metal objects between the router and your computer? e.g. The airing cupboard tank (can't remember what it's called:P)
 
it's a netgear standard one, the really popular model.

I'm a floor up, about 7 metres distance. Yeh there is now that u mention it a boiler right next to the study where it's kept but its too low to directly block the path really. My old router used to do this as well but not as much, can't help thinking a new reciever would help
