wireless router to wireless router connection?

Hi, I am trying to connect two wireless routers together. Ie, one is connected to the internet and the other to the wireless router that is connected to the internet.

How would I go about setting this up?

What are you trying to achieve? Are you trying to use it as a range extender type device? Or are you after multiple wireless networks?

Also, what hardware are both router devices?

Basically I want a range extender device. One is a buffalo and the other a logitec device. I live in Japan so the product No. may not be of help. But if providing it will help I will?

Can you have multiple wireless networks? I thought it will only pick up one device at a time? But if it can pick up multiple devices at any time , that could work.

It is really going to come down to what your current wireless hardware supports. They need to either support WDS (Wireless Distribution System) or wireless bridging. I wanted to do the same thing with a spare wireless router I have here and connect to my main one as an extender. Unfortunately the spare device I have does not support this.

Probably the best thing would be to log into the web interface of each device and look around for any bridging / wds options.

I could be wrong, however I thought to successfully have two wireless routers connected in this way they had to be the same type / chipset.

If the devices do not support this natively you might be able to put an aftermarket firmware in the routers to achieve it. I have done this with DD-WRT before and got a wireless bridge working, depends on whether that device is compatible with DD-WRT though.

Having multiple networks is not ideal. You could do it, however you are going to have dropouts as the wireless clients roam from one AP to another.

It's fairly simple to set up.

You need a cable from an lan port on router 1 to lan port on router 2, do not use the internet port on router 2. Change the Internal IP of router 2 to match router one. Example.

Router 1 IP is 192.168.1.1
Router 2 ip needs to be 192.168.1.2

Router 2 needs dhcp disabled so that all machines can see each other.

Just want to thank all you guys for the help.

OK, I am on a XP OS with this PC. Being that I was never really good with system setups, where and how would I go about
#1, Finding the Routers IP?
#2, Finding the IP of the other router?
#3, Where and what is dhcp?

Lastly, do I connect to the internet port on router 1 and not on router 2? Or do not connect the internet port on both routers?

Thanks so much for the help, it is appreciated.

Dave

Answers to your questions.

1. You will need to login to the routers configuration page.

2. Same as #1

3. DHCP is the router automatically giving each device that is attached to it an IP address. You don't want the second router giving out these IP addresses, you want router 1 to do this.

Here is a quick description of what needs to be done.

Cable from modem to internet port on the first router. Then a cable from 1 of the 4 lan ports on the first router to an lan port on the second router, do not connect it to the internet port. To change the internal IP address of router 2, you have to be physically connected to it. Connect a cable from your pc to an lan port on the second router. Again, you will need to disable dhcp on the second router and change the internal IP.

If you give me model numbers of each router, I can help you better.

Thanks for the quick reply,

I have been fumbling around the PC and still cannot locate the router setup screen. I found its properties and what its IP address is, but I don't know how to change it. Forgive my stupidness, but where would the setup screen for the router be located usually in XP?

#1, Logitec: LAN-WH300N/DGR
#2, Buffalo Air staition: WZR-HP-G302H
I am sorry they are both Japanese model numbers, but I would guess there is the product in the USA.

Cheers Dave

The buffalo router's IP address should be 192.168.11.1
The Logitech routers IP address should be 192.168.2.1

These numbers aren't available inside XP. When connected to each router you enter those IP addresses into the browser's address bar to access the router configuration pages. I would suggest you contact someone to help you set this up. You will also need login information for these routers... username and password. All this information should be in the manuals for each one.

I gather this will be to difficult for me to do by myself? I have the login info, I just need to know how to get to the setup pages???

Sorry I thought you were trying to setup the wireless devices as a wireless bridge. ie no cables between the two.

If you have the ability to run a cable between them then that simplifies it a lot. If possible I would be trying to turn off the NAT functions on the 2nd wireless router and turn it into a dumb Access point. That way it is all one lan segment and you don't need to worry about different IP ranges.

You enter those IP addresses into your computers web browser and login to the router. Once logged in, you'll see the configuration page.
