Wireless routers and how they work?

Okay so I am thinking of buying a dell laptop, I would plan to use it around the house (wireless). I however don't know how wireless works.

If I get the laptop configured with.
Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Mini-Card

but my router is 802.11a/b will it work? (I assume not) becausethe router is not supporting the G type.

Basically just make sure you got the same letters in your wireless card as your router? Thats my understanding of it anyways? thnx

I would recommend getting the Intel Pro Wireless 3945 a/b/g wireless card for ~ $30 more, if you are customizing it from the Dell website.

they don't have a a/b/g

So I was right though in my assumptions, the card in the laptop, and the router needing the same corresponding letters?

The Intel 3945 802.11a/g also does B, because 802.11g devices are backwards compatible with 802.11b.
