Wireless settings - where are they

I may need to do a clean install of Windows 7 because I'm upgrading from Vista Home Premium. I've read it's not possible to do an upgrade only and keep settings because of compatibility issues.

I'm scared to death of losing my wireless settings and having to call the company again to get set up. I have no idea of the password - it's been years. Is there a file or location where all the settings are stored that I could copy after the clean install?

Why? What company? Describe your setup in more detail and maybe we can help you recover it. It should be no big deal for an admin to recover/reset a password - it's a common task - and it's sort of... like, their job. Don't fear the IT guy. :D

The "company" is the router manufacturer (Netgear). My home network has 2 wireless laptops. ISP is Insight (telephone-cable tv-internet), broadband connection. My hesitancy in calling for support is from my experience replacing an old desktop with a second laptop. ISP said to call router manufacturer for assistance. Router manufacturer refused to help unless I paid for tech support ("sorry sir, your warranty has expired"). Eventually I spoke to a supervisor who talked me through, but made a point that this complimentary assistance was the last time.

Sooo.... I have a modem, a router, 2 laptops. When Netgear reluctantly talked me through setup of laptop #2 it was a bit complicated which is why I want to keep the settings. Or at least find the right ones to write down, and a procedure for reinstalling them.

Or maybe I'm making too much of this, and it's way easier than I'm making it . . .

If you purchased the router (IE it wasn't given to you and configured by your ISP) then it's your responsibility, not your ISPs. You're not going to loose anything on your router's end by reloading your computer.

This page does a good of a job explaining how to access/change your wireless settings. If you can't view your WEP/WPA/Whatever through the config page, you may have to change it. Of course you'll need to reset the keys on all computers connecting wirelessly to the router, but it's really not that difficult.

Wireless setting definitely helps one to be mobile especially around your household. So Internet can be accessed anywhere on your laptop.
