wireless signal strength

i live in a two floor apartment with three roommates, and the wireless modem is downstairs in one of my roommate's rooms. I get poor signal strength on both my laptop and xbox 360, but one of my roommates who lives upstairs with me, with only 2 bathrooms dividing us, gets excellent strength. his door is probably 30 feet away from mine. Its a linksys wireless range extender. Besides moving the modem to upstairs, which i dont know if i could do, is there any device i could try buy that would extend more bandwidth to my room? im also gonna try changing channels on the modem.

i had a problem kinda like that i just bought a better antenna but the xbox wireless thing i didnt buy one i jus bridge mine to my laptop and it works really good and saved 30 or so dollars. theres is wireless signal extenders but the good ones r pricey this is what i bought and it works great heres a link http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=SCB10X&cat=NET

Ya i am also suffering from this problem and i came to a conclusion that wireless signal is not as powerful as the signals which are carried through wires.
