So I did read specs but can anyone here say what GPU is really recommended for this game?

I still haven't purchased my new GPU yet and this game is top of priority to start playing.

-find a used GTX 770 for $220 or less
-but it
-never worry about system requirements again, without spending $400 or more

The 770 isn't nearly as powerful as you think it is. It's a solid card, dont' get me wrong, but it's way past it's prime and not a good recommendation anymore in most instances.

$400 range canadian.

I keep seeing good deals on the R9 380 but I'm more looking into an Nvidia card.

The 970 seem too expensive though.. least in CAD $$

I know that it's becoming a tad outdated, but I have one and have maxed out every game I've thrown at it (1080p) including the Star Wars Battlefront beta. I also suggest it because I like Nvidia better at this point. I recently found out that the GTX 900 series supports Directx 12, along with some kind of ultra HDMI or something like that.
Laquer Head, at that price range you should maybe look at a GTX 960 if you, like me, are set on Nvidia. Also on the quoted comment, if you have the extra money yes the GTX 770 is kind of lame. However the GTX 750 ti, as I discovered through a trusted website, is a very popular value card still widely used today. If I had a lot of money to spare I would be using a GTX 980, but I am happy with what I have being on a limited budget right now.

What about this, I can score 960 for cheap, is there a point in doing 960 SLI, or is more sensible to just do a single 970

I always prefer single card setups to two weaker ones, but I'm not sure how the two would compare in performance.

Id say research those two cards with Witcher 3, because sometimes SLI is actually slower than a single card. It really depends on the cards and the games

You'd be much, much better off going with a single GTX 970 than SLI 960's. SLI really needs to be reserved for those with multiple monitors and people who are interested in going 4K and beyond. If you're on one or even two monitors at 1080p, the SLI really isn't going to net you a very large difference over the single card.

I personally have a GTX 960 4GB. While I haven't attempted Witcher III with it, it is a pretty admirable card for the $245 I paid for it. If you can afford it, I'd suggest a 970.

get the best single card you can afford, my suggest. SLI, as some people have pointed out, usually isn't as good as a more powerful single GPU.
