WMP downgrade?

Hi,

I've been experiencing problems with WMP 11. So I decided to downgrade to WMP 10, which i liked better than WMP 11 anyway. But when I tried to install it, I got some message about my system not being compatible or something, and it wouldn't install. which i don't understand, considering I had WMP 10 on my system not 10 months ago. Now it won't let me downgrade.

Has anybody else had this problem? Or any idea as to why it won't let me install?

Thanks,
Kevinaz

yeah even if you google most guides on there don't help, i,ve been in similar situation, one of the ways out of this is to repair windows so that it will install player9 then you can upgrade to 10 !!

or google "uninstall media player 11"

hope it helps

For XP go into the add/remove programs in the Control Panel and then the add/remove Windows components section. Fully remove WMP from there. That also means taking WMP 9 along with 11 so that no traces are left. WMP 10 will then install clean. The one thing I hate with Vista now is the Programs+Features where you can no longer remove any MS components installed.

There's no longer a recovery console with the new automatic startup repair tool found on the installation disk when booting from that. For XP however you can use this method and have ne need to perform a repair install of Windows to see WMP 10 instead pf the newer more Vista geared 11.

yeah and tick "show updates" to remove any other stuff related to wmp11.
but PCeye ,for me ,that method you mentioned never worked (tried a dozen times). even if you said it wipes mp completely if you go to program files-->windows media player, it's still there you can even run it after you un-installed it.funny, but mp is picky !!!:)

so thats why in my case i repaired.lol
yeah and i was checking out vista, really sad to see that windows components is not available !!!:(

It works! You simply have to manually remove any folders left over as well as right clicking on the folder seen in the Programs menu and clicking delete there. You can also right click on the Start bar itself, open the Start Menu tab, and click the Customise button seen there.

At the top of the next screen the option to add or remove items seen in the Start menu is right there for use. A browse in the system registry for those with some experience under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Microsoft will bring you to the main key for "MediaPlayer" just as seen here. Highlight that and open the edit option on the menu bar to say goodbye by clicking delete there.

ohh.. probably i missed that

Wow. I didn't know this was so involved. I'll try pc eye's method before I repair though.

Thanks

The method worked quite well when tried on the few occasions were first the upgrade to WMP 11 was allowed to see what the newer version offered to be removed later. Then when getting 10 back on the popup for wmp updates saw 11 install itself again! You have to avoid allowing any updates once you get 10 installed again to avoid seeing it replaced by 11. That was one note to add here. Otherwise it goes easy using this method.

Wait, how does that work? I go into where you said, and all I see is what is shown in the attached pic: it only has an option to remove the WMP shortcut. I can't find anything else related to WMP...

The larger screen shot here will show how you simply uncheck the WMP item and click the next button to have Windows uninstall WMP. That's for WMP there not just any desktop shortcut. The jpg below will show more detail on this.
