won't boot after cleaning heat sink

VERY Weird -- After watching several videos I just cleaned the cpu fan and heat sinks on my two desktop computers: an Acer Aspire and an HP Pavilion. I cleaned off the old thermal , put new thermal adhesives on (as directed by Artic Silver) and installed the cpu and heat sink into both of my desktops. But neither computer will boot up. When the Acer is started the the fan immediately kicks into overdrive and I get a brief "no signal" box on my monitor. As well, basically that same thing is happening with the Pavilion either. It starts for a second, the power light goes out but the fan keep going and I get the "no signal" on the monitor.

Any help is MUCH appreciated!

When you pulled the heatsink off the processor did by chance the processor come out of the socket? You didn't get thermal paste down in the socket? Is the heatsink back on properly?

Yes the cpu did come out of the socket when I took the heat sink off but I'm pretty sure no paste fell, plus the box was vertical. Yes the heatsink is on and all lined up. Don't forget -- this is happening on two computers! Thanks.

If the cpu came out of the socket you have damage, either the socket is bad or you have damaged the processor.

Is it possible that you may have hit something and loosened the connection. On the one that the cpu didn't come out of the socket, what happens when you turn it on?
