Word 97 Problem

ok hi guys and gals maybe you can help me. you see i'm working on a computer where in word when you work on a file that is say 71kb in size and then delete a couple of lines (like 1 - 3) or replace a couple of lines with 1 or 2 words and save the file the file size jumps up 95kb then when I right click in the folder and select "refresh" the size goes down to 85kb. any ideas on why it increases by so much when I take OUT data.

also if I delete all of the text in the file and save it the file size stays the same but word 97 shows no words in there but notepad show a bunch garbage.
