I'm trying to convert some old Word docs created with Word 2000. There is nothing complex in the files, formatting is fairly standard. Some of the documents have 1 inch margins.
I tried using Open Office Writer on Ubuntu 9.10 to convert them, but there are a few issues. On the 1 inch margin documents sometimes a line is pushed over to the next page. On a 20+ page document, this makes some of the information out of context. Also, some of the files have random newlines, and some of the spaces between words are so large they look like tabs. The strange thing is that the errors are very rare. A document may only have a couple in it. I have 25 documents and some are large. I can't go through each line by line and try to fiddle with the original Word docs to make them turn out alright in PDF format.
Because Open Office is on Ubuntu and the docs were created on Windows, the fonts are probably different, so that could be part of the problem. However, that still does not really explain the weird behavior or the fact that it is rare.
Any help?
