my friend wants to use a gift card to buy it. he has a problem with an old computer that he wants to get working so that he can listen to music on a nice stereo system he has. but suddenly the computer stopped working. there is an error that makes it so that every time he starts the computer it goes through the booting screen for xp, but then doesnt load his profile... instead it says "dumping phisical memory." then it doesnt work. so i told him to unplug his RAM and plug it back in, though it was the same. so we unpluged the cmos battery. something changed, but still didnt work. we got an xp cd to put it on and re-install windows. but when it started it sayed that it couldnt find a hard drive. the primary boot device was the cd-drive too. he checked the cable connections and all were right. is the hard drive dead?
its IDE by the way. so would the one above work?

The HDD shouldn't be dead considering it shouldn't dump physical memory... try buying more RAM. Considering if he wants to listen to music etc, hes gonna have to get more anyways if its that low.

what RAM is it/ how much?

check hdd jumper settings. (remember last cable device is MASTER, second is SLAVE). Reset CMOS. This should do it
