Working with MSI Afterburner. Need some advice.

Hello.

I'm sitting here with my new PC and playing around a bit. Trying to learn a thing or two. So far i have not set my PC ablaze, but i need some advice as to where the limits are.

I don't know ''jack shit'' about PC's or overclocking, so i'm taking it nice and slow. I tried to set the Core Clock(MHz) higher(in conjunction with the Core Clock setting getting higher, the Shader Clock followed. By default the Shader Clock is higher, but it will not overextend itself.). I then applied, and not much happened. I saw that the temperature went up with about 2-3 degrees Celsius. I then tried to set them a bit higher, which caused my screen driver to stop working, and me nearly pissing my pants.

After this i resat the settings again, and they are now back to normal.

I need some advice as to where the limit goes? For example i can control the fan speed, and i can of course hear that the higher the setting is, the higher noise is coming. Nothing that's bothering me, but can the fans actually break, if i set it to max?

Any advice/tutorials that you folks might have would be extremely nice to get.

Thanks beforehand, and have a nice day :-)

wrong section mate, you are talking about your graphics card! :P
you need to overclock your cpu in BIOS :P

Yeah.. You did well at confusing me there.

How do i access my BIOS? And why should i overclock my CPU instead? :)

Just for the info if anyone needs it, my CPU is Intel Core i7 3930K Sandybride-E + Cooler Master Hyper 212S Cooler, and is on 3.20 GHz.

Also, can an admin move this thread. Sorry for the trouble.

with an unlocked K cpu, you can overclock by the multiplier.
To go to the bios you need to restart your pc and press Del when he starts again. There you can overclock.
First read much about overclocking before you're gonna do it.

Hang on. Before we get too far into this you need to explain a few things to us so we can see exactly where you are.

Just to clear some things up...

Like SmileMan said, MSI afterburner is for overclocking your GPU not CPU. CPU OCing is done through the BIOS and GPU OCing is done through software (like Afterburner)

With that processor you do not need to OC it if you do not want to. It will be plenty fine for gaming at stock. With that being said it is fairly easy to OC provided that you know what you are doing and do not take any unnecessary risks with your system. We can help you there.

GPU OCing will yield a more noticeable performance boost in games, but it is a bit tougher to find the sweet spot.

What exactly are you looking to do? Also what GPU are you using?

Thanks for the great response mate.

My GPUs are: 2 x MSI GeForce GTX 560 Ti TWINFROOZER II Edition(SLI)

I won't even try to OC the CPU at this point then. Thanks for that response too.

No problem. That's what we are here for.

If you do want to dable in overclocking feel free to drop another post in here and we'll get you through it.

Make sure to keep your overclock conservative when using SLI. This is because each card has its own set of behaviors and irks, so you run double the risk of driver crashing (which is mostly harmless, but it resets your clocks and is very annoying). Within MSI Afterburner's advanced settings is a voltage control. This will allow more stable overclocks, which will allow higher frequencies without the crashes. However, higher voltage results in more power consumption and higher temperature, but you should be able to deal with this by upping the fan speed and watching temperatures.

Like said above, your CPU will be simple to overclock as the multiplier is unlocked... you just have to learn the BIOS and your CPU's quirks.

When you mention driver crashing, do you mean like the screen driver that stopped working for me?

For now i have no real need to do extreme overclock or even overclock by any larger means, i just wanted to test it out.

Also do you know if i can just set the fan speed on the graphic cards to max, without the danger of the fans breaking?

the fans will be fine at 100%, if you leave them on auto however, they will speed up and slow down as necessary so there is never really any need to ever touch the fan control option

and 2 560s in sli? no need to overclock anyway lol

Yeah just screen driver and the Windows notification saying kernel ## has stopped working or whatever.

Yeah testing out is where we all start out... I mean k|ngp|n, one of the most renowned overclockers, just started overclocking because it sounded cool to squeeze more performance out of an already-built system.

The fans wont break... if the fans break on their own accord, the card manufacturer will gladly replace it for that is an immensely rare occurence.

Well the same reason you overclock any GPU... more performance!

Alright then, i'll set the fans on 100%. When they are on 40 %, and i play battlefield on ultra, my GPU's are about 60 degrees Celsius. Is that high or low?

Instead of creating a new thread, i thought i ask you a question. With the fans turned on 100%(95) the GPU's are about 50 Degrees Celsius. This is quite low, so i can overclock them both.

I attached three JPG pictures. First one is how my current settings are, and how it looks like, when i'm just browsing around the desktop and so forth.

The second picture is after a good session of BF3, where the temperatures are not going higher.

Third picture are my settings in BF3.

All the time playing with around 60 FPS constantly. *EDIT* After turning off V SYNC i'm between 60-100 FPS, same temperatures.

So, by overclocking i should be able to get above 60 FPS, and perhaps higher graphic settings, right?

Hope you can see that i wrote this, i don't want to create a new thread. :)

You are not gonna get higher then 60FPS if vertical sync. is on, try playing without and you'll see it goes above 60. If you disable it, your temperatures will increase.

After turning it off, my FPS increases, but the temperatures does not.
