Would 64 bit or 32 bit be better for my purpose?

Hello

I just bought a new i5 laptop computer with Windows 7 that enables using 64 bit or 32 bit. I am not sure which would be the best to use for my purpose. I hope to use VLC media player, Avidemux, Microsoft office 2003, Internet Explorer and Firefox. I also need to network to some older computers running Win XP and Win 2000 and I assume they would be running on 32 bit.

I heard that 64 bit has an advantage as more RAM can be added which could help with buffer under runs that I have had while playing VLC media player on my older computers. However, I heard that some software does not run with 64 bit and I am not sure how networking would go. I am not very experienced in setting up computers.

I want to play videos that I recorded on the hard drive through a TV tuner card. I use VLC media player to play the videos that are sometimes about 4GB per hour of recording. Sometimes I also play back the videos at double normal speed to save time. I also plan to connect a tuner card to the laptops to record TV programs.

Would 64 bit enable playing or editing files that I recorded or saved on 32 bit systems on my network?
Would the appearance and functioning of the software be the same with 64 bit?

Would 64 bit or 32 bit be better for my purpose?

You should be fine with 64 bit-I use it, and every program I used to run in x86 works the same in x64. And as you know it can address more memory than x86. There is no difference between x64 and x86 in terms of how you use it in my opinion, just one supports more memory, and one doesn't, basically. You'll find a lot of people on this forum who use x64 bit without a glitch, who will probably post shortly.
 
I have 64 bit installed. everything works fine.
On the lighter side it can be another adventure getting some to run.
There is a compatibility mode if needed. And yes, your right.
there could be some issues. just another hump and adventure.
it can be done.
