Basically need a laptop for graduate school and daily computing i.e. web browsing, youtube, etc.

Won't be gaming with it

Price range 500-1000, preferably on lower end but willing to spend extra if it's worth it.

15-17 inch screen, would prefer 17 inch but not if it will cost much more

Really, the only two things I'm concerned with are it having Microsoft Office Student Home and that in a year and a half the laptop isn't really slow and I am told like always that it needs more memory.

A couple questions I've come across in my research?

1) Is 500 GB of memory that superior to 250 GB that it warrants the extra money

2) I've been told to get the Intel i-5 processor but it seems most laptops come with the i-3, for my purposes does it make much of a difference.

3) I've been recommended Toshiba and Dell by the people I've asked, but I'm not sure if the Geek Squad guy was trying to pull a fast one with the Toshiba recommendation because I havent heard it anywhere else. Would everyone agree with these or do you have other suggestions?

I really appreciate the help. Thanks

1. Depends how much room you need. If you have music and movies and big files you need stored, then it may be. But, it could just as easily not be.

2. For just basic internet and the like the i3 should be fine.

3. Toshiba is a good brand. I would recommend them, Asus, Acer, Dell-although some people don't like them. I have a five year old laptop from them going strong.-, but stay away from hp/compaq. I have horrible experience with them, as well as crappy parts.

Toshiba, Asus, sony are good brand.
Dell is not bad, but not as good as those 3 mentioned

Price wise, your budget should allow you to get core i5, or even i7 if you willing to spend $1000. While for basic stuff, core i3 would be enough. And as you are not use it for gaming, delicated graphic card is not necessary.

Here is my pick

Dell Inspiron 15R, core i3 350m, 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD, $550
