Would appreciate some help finding a new pc

---First off, let me say that I'm not very knowledgeable with computers. I usually just ask friends, but all my tech-savy friends moved away recently :(

I've had my computer for six years now and I think it's about time to get a new one, because this computer is having trouble doing mundane things and I've done all I can to help. I've ask my tech-savy friends when they still lived in the area about this problem and they all told me that my computer was just "old". Not sure how that can make a computer slow though?

Anyways. I've been looking into gaming computers and they don't seem so expensive, compared to what I paid for my computer six years ago. I'll probably do the occasional internet research for college. I don't know if this will change anything, but I'm pointing this out just in-case.

My budget will most likely be around $600 for a gaming computer and I won't need a monitor as I already having one.

Here's some specs of some of the games I wish to play, if this will help with determining what to buy:

Hard Drive Space : 3.5 GB (Multiple saves and user created maps will increase the amount of needed hard disk space.)

Processor : Intel® Core 2 Duo Family, AMD®64 X2 5200+, AMD® Phenom or better

RAM : 2 GB

Video Card : NVIDIA® 8600 GTS or better, ATI®X1900 or better 512 Mb of graphic memory

Sorry for asking you guys to do most of the work since I really have no knowledge about computer technology, current or past.

Let me say again that my budget will most likely be about $600 for a gaming pc. I really do appreciate any help and I am learning more as I go so I'm not completely lost out here :-)

(P.S. I forgot to mention that when I do actually get a new computer I will need to learn how to put the thing together. My friends used to do it, but that doesn't mean it's easy... I don't think?)

I don't understand. Do you want to buy all the components and assemble the computer yourself or do you want a pre-built computer?

Oh, I should have been more specific with the topic title. Darn it.

From my knowledge, I believe buying all the components of a computer and then putting them together is cheaper then buying a pre-built computer. Right?

If that is so then I will want to just buy all the components. Although, like I mentioned I have experience putting computers together. Hopefully, this is easy and something I can learn.

Sorry for the vagueness.

If you have previous experience, it shouldn't be too difficult. You definitely get better components and an operating system disc building a system yourself (most original equipment manufacturers don't even give buyers a restore disc anymore). Are you also aware of electrostatic discharge precautions?

With a budget of $600 take a look at the following components:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Windsor (3.0 gigahertz) - $92

About $40 Shipping costs

This leaves you about $90 for a video card (after the $25 mail-in-rebate). I would ask in the video card forum what the best video card you could buy for $95 is. I also didn't add an optical drive in. You may need to buy one that reads DVDs if your current optical drive doesn't.

AMD!!! 100% of the time I say intel but since your budget is 600 for a gaming rig you will just have to deal with the child labor overheating cheaply made hunk of metal they call amd...

I've said I have no experience with putting computers together...

Thanks for the list of components. Me taking a look at them won't do me any good, because I don't really know what's good and what's bad with computers. Maybe I'll start to understand once more people help in the topic.

Mail-in rebate? I have to mail something to the company before I buy stuff online?

You say I will need an optical drive that reads DVD's? Shouldn't I only need an optical drive that reads game CD's. I'm not gonna watch movies on my computer or anything.

But you have to buy a operating system and all Windows Vista discs are in DVD format now (the reason they went to DVD is Digital Versatile Discs can hold far more data than CD-ROMs). Without an operating system the hardware you purchase is useless.

How mail in rebates work is like this:
1) You buy the item paying full price.
2) You mail the rebate in with whatever items the manufacturer requires of you to send in as proof you purchased their product.
3) You wait about 9 weeks and they mail you your money.

Oh I see.

What's the difference between Vista and XP with gaming computers? Is there any?

If I follow your setup then how much will it be for an optical drive? Just as long as it stays around the projected $600 I mentioned.

I had no idea. I've learned something new today:)

Alright well, does anyone know of a good optical drive that won't put me over my estimated budget or does anyone have another opinion on what components I should get (one's that differ from 2048megabytes suggestion).
