Would I be okay if I did this?

Okay, a while ago, my friend got a virus on his PC and he's looking into formatting, but he doesn't have a copy of XP. I offered to mail him mine for him to format, but I want to know, would I get in trouble by Microsoft? It's a legit copy, and he has a legit copy as well, it's just infected. The only difference is, he has Home Edition, I have Professional. Would I get in trouble for "redistributing" a copy of XP to somebody who also has XP, but a different version that has a virus?

Would you get in trouble?, not likely cause Microsoft would never know. But frankly if your telling the truth then you friends COA won't work with WinXP Pro since it's for WinXP Home. And if you gave him your key then it wouldn't activate since your is already activated. What your friend needs to do is is find a copy of Windows XP Home (OEM or Retail which ever he has) and use his COA to install. It doesn't much matter where it comes from as long as you have a ligitatime COA.

I don't think you would get in trouble but he wouldn't be able to install PRO from your disk.

Also if your friend would like to get help with his infection someone should be able to help him if he makes a thread in the Computer Security section of the forum following the instructions from this thread.

At the same time, though, I've formatted a couple times over using the same product key. My aunt and uncle loaned it to me when I had to format, and there's was already activated, and it worked for me.
