would it be worth it?

right now im running an 8600GT OC and was wanting a little more oomph from my card. i was thinking of upgrading to an 8800 GTX or a 2900XT, but people keep telling me that the difference would hardly be noticable enough to justify spending that kind of money. if i were to buy a GTX i would want to be able to run games on highest settings for at least another year or two, is that a pretty realistic expectation?

8600GT - 8800GTS or GTX IS a huge jump, BUT i wouldn't buy a new card right now. Wait until late november when the GeForce 9 series is said to be coming out and the prices on 8800's will be lower. Or just buy a 9 series card, they are starting with the 9800's so you will get the best of the series straight off and it will last you a good few years.

The 8800's however i don't see having such a large life span, they will probably handle Crysis all fine, but remember we are just at the beginning of DX10 and the new gfx engines. I'd say the 8800 would last a year and the 9800 three to four.

Wait for the 9800's.

i think you're probably right, as bad as i want one... the rational part of my brain keeps telling me to wait...i could wait for the 45nm chips and the 9 series nvidia cards :) and then id be in gaming heaven
