would it effect performance?

I wanna make this:
heatsink.jpg

into:

fghjdhjdd.jpg

reason why:

im going to put it into my case...case.... i want to take off the standard 72mm fan and put a 120mm fan over it to maximize airflow in the little thing...

would it hurt the performance much? even considering the fact that its getting a 120mm fan?

The thing it will effect is temps. How that effects overall performance will depend on how changing to a larger fan bears on the temps directly. You would have to custom mount the 120mm fan if you can't fit it on an interchangable mount that will fasten to the bolt pattern there. What case are you trying this in?

my case...case

its not going to be bolted to the fan, but to the acrylic above the fan i'll need to shave the HS down a bit to make it fit cause there isnt any room in the little box...

it wont affect the performance too much.. sure,.. you're removing some sirface that is normally used for heat tranaction between heatsink and air.. but this wond make that much of a difference ;)
just make sure you make the top of the finn's nice and smooth again, and you'll be just fin.. jsut dont excpect to overclock it a lot :)

I cant overclock alot anyways... Via chipset :P

Woooo nasty! I guess you are in a predictament there! I couldn't imagine waking up and finding that type of thing inside my own case. :P Despite running ATI cards I always seem to end up with nForce chipsets for some unknown reason?!

maybe, but they overclock like someone pissed on it so the temps arent high :P but something useful about the 120MM fan: it will coll the RAM, northbridge, CPU, and MOSFETS because thats where it will be centered on the case... thats like the main reason why i want to put the 120mm fan on, but im not sure if i want to cut up my 4800+ HSF, so i'll wait and see which kind the new processor comes with and see if its smaller

PC Eye, this is for my mini PC dubbed: "Case...Case" not my first choice... but i got a great deal on it though, so i cannot complain... as my favorite? nForce 4 SLI for me :D

You could decide on a premade HSF with a 92mm fan that will go right on and simply add one or two separate 120mm fans to really get the air moving. Despite the 140mm intake and 120mm rear exhaust I just had to have those two 120mm led fans on the side cover as well. Well I couldn't let that nForce 4 SLI capable chipset get too warm now could I? :D

I think you missed something... my NF4 mobo isnt in my Case...Case, its in my regular computer, i have the Via computer in my Case...Case, look at my "My newest mod" thread and look to see its size, question has been answered by Arch, thanks :D

you have the AeroEngine II case too?

Of course! I got mine to replace the 48C nightmare seen with the old case used for the old Socket A board. The 939 ran hot in there. :( But as things go the new case sees idle board temps as low as 31C. :D

Some of those images you posted there were kind of glared out. But the suit case style was a little different there. :D

damnnnn, i realllly like that case..

It's even "cooler" with a pair of 120mm blue led fans pointed inwards. :D Since the case itself is positioned inside a pc case compartment even with the cabinent door open and no back panel blocking air flow at the back of the work station I see an average of cpu and board temps at 33C cpu/32C board even with load. "attention pc+k-mart shoppers there's a blue light special on aisle... " :D

i'm about 98% sure it's not as bright as this was:

the pictures show no justice...

6 blue CCFL's + two more on the 120mm fan for the CPU HSF, 2 blue LED 120mm fans, 2 blue LED 92mm fans, and to top it all off, the PSU had a 120mm blue LED fan in it..

Here the 140mm has company with the 120mm that was included and the pair of Antec 120mm models thrown onto the side panel. Now if I decided to "dress it up" it might get a little too bright for a screen shot. You would be advised to put on dark glasses before viewing! :P

yeah, with all of its lights in its prime, you could see both of my windows lit a very bright blue from down the street

Just be careful how much you throw into it. You certainly don't want anyone thinking some sci-fi film is being made there nor someone thinking the house is ??? "Spooky"!
